Back in 1986 Clayton Patterson, an iconic Lower East Side (LES) artist, decided to create a revolutionary baseball cap. By adding custom patches to a classic five-panel cap, he created an instant classic. Any and every one in NYC and Hollywood sported the new look. And now, thanks to Patterson’s collaboration the LES punk band Dameht, people can do so once again. Here’s everything you need to know:
The Creation of Clayton Caps
Clayton’s cap idea came when he noticed street gang members going into some shops on Avenue A and ironing their gang letters on jackets. After talking to the shop’s owners, Clayton decided to take advantage of the opportunity to embroider images and words on baseball caps.
The Popularity of Clayton Caps
When Clayton Caps hit the scene, the skull, devil, and checkered cab patches stood out amongst the crowd—and a new, rebellious style was born. Notable artists, actors, and celebrities all wore the caps and supported Clayton’s artistic, cultural movement.
The Revival of Clayton Caps
Because Clayton didn’t want to internationally outsource the work that went into creating his caps, production ceased. . . until now. Clayton has chosen the punk band Dameht to help him release a new set of caps. Dameht first attracted Clayton because of their rebellious nature. He looks for Dameht to bring the LES (and NYC) into the new era while still holding on to roots that made the area (and the city) the home of such incredible artistic and cultural movements.
